The best thing I liked about the monarch hotel was the fire escape out the window
What I didn't like about the hotel was the beds
Definitely not the Hilton, but good price and everyone was nice. We wanted to save money on the hotel and we did, without having to sacrifice comfort.
The hotel offer a good price, clean rooms, close to Polk St. and many cafes and restaurants.
The location can be a little upsetting at night.
The adventures of the "crazy" elevator..looking out my window to people who live across the way. The price was great, there was an amazing coffee shop across the way..walking distance to almost everything. I would stay there again for sure. Its old & has history behind it..Plus you know it can with stand an earthquake!!
When we arrived at night it was a little scary..no a/c, but you can open your windows. But be careful with that b/c there aren't any screens on the windows & you could easily fall out!!
It is in the center of many attractions in San Francisco, however this area of the city has not been "cleaned up" yet. A very active neighborhood though lots of litter.
Everything worked: the door lock, plenty of hot water, and the elevatior. Clean room, but small. Coffe in lobby, no restaurant, $24 charge for parking.
I have stayed here 3 times before at this hotel. The room charge before tax was 193.20 for 4 nights. I did pay 1.50 extra per night to use the room safe. The room was reasonably clean. It was a room with just one double bed. The room size was small, smaller than the rooms with a king or queen bed. Not many channel choices on the tv. I did not come to San Francisco to spend all the my time in the room so I had no problem with the samll room or the channel selection. The room was reasonably clean. I have stayed here 3 times before and have always been satisfied with my stay each time. This is an old hotel and is not a luxury hotel by any means. The bathroom did have a tub and shower. The room did have an iron and ironing board and hair dryer. Unlike the King and Queen rooms this one did not have a walk in closet, but the closet was adequate. Alot of people critisizing this hotel have said the area is dangerous. Now there are street people around, but they have not bothered me., I have been out late at night around the hotel and nothing bad has ever happened to me. Some reviews criticize the hotel staff for not being friendly, but I have never had to wait long to check in to my room and the bill at the end of the stay has always been correct. Service may not be with a smile and they may not be super friendly, but I could care less about that. To sum it up the service has always met my needs. I stay here mainly for the great room rates and the location is close to places I want to go to.
If you want a luxury room with all the amenities stay somewhere else and expect to pay a lot more, but if you want an inexpensive room that can meet your basic needs then this is a good place. San Francisco hotel rooms are a lot more expensive than most cities, so consider that when evaluating the price of a room.
it was smelly , very very dirty rooms got a rash from lying on the bed we checked out after like 2 hours
Offered good complementary coffee.
I noticed an extra charge on my credit card for $25.00. I called the hotel this morning and was told it was a "service charge" that would be refunded. I will be keeping a close watch for this on my statement.
It was close to everything downtown. People that worked there were nice.
The walls are paper thin and heard people talking in other rooms until 5am the first night I was there. The location was in a noisey part of town and our room was on the street side. Not the best part of town to have my daughter in.
Helpful at the desk. Quiet inside--no other room noises.
In a bad area for street noise all night! Ceiling fan was loose and vibrated.
It is good with fair price
Good value, 5 blocks from my conference. Access to reasonable overnight parking ($20.00/night - a bargain for San Francisco!)
The elevator was out for two days and I was lodged on the fifth floor. It was working again the morning I checked out.
Hotel was clean and met our needs. It seems to be an old establishment with lots of character.
Rooms were small. Parking limited. Area had, what appeared to be, transients/homeless people across the street. If window was left open there was a lot of street noise.
Very inexpensive with all the regular facilities like clean room, free wifi, ironing board and easily accessible location with plenty of places to eat around. A good choice for a short stay.
The surrounding blocks are a bit seedy with homeless people. But its San Francisco, so this is pretty normal and its pretty safe.
Rooms were priced right and the location was closed to Union Square. It has been a very long time since I stayed at a hotel that had smoking rooms. Not in our room, but I could smell it in the halls on the lower flooors was we used the stairs.
